The ESRC have funded Queen Mary, University of London to undertake a two year research programme considering low paid migrant work in London.
The project focuses on six sectors of the economy in which migrant workers are known to be employed in low-paid work:
- London Underground (cleaning)
- General office cleaning
- Hospitality
- Home care work
- Construction
- Food processing
A range of reports have been published so far, highlighting that London’s economy is reliant on migrant workers enduring very low wages, few work related benefits, unsociable hours, high rates of deskilling and low benefit uptake.
