Evidence of migrant worker exploitation in Wales
The North Wales Daily Post recently reported on evidence provided to the Welsh Affairs committee. Trade union leaders documented how migrant workers in North Wales have been extorted and threatened at gunpoint by corrupt work agencies.
They said workers, most of them from Poland, are being crammed into houses and ripped off in Mafia-style rackets, with the vast majority too scared to go to the police.
Between 8,000 and 15,000 migrants are estimated to be working in Wrexham - with 170,000 spread throughout the whole of Wales.
Transport and General Workers’ Union project manager Charlie Jones and TUC learning services development officer Barbara Hales told horror stories of how immigrant workers received threats and intimidation. Ms Jones said she knew of one case when a man was bundled into a vehicle at gunpoint.
Speakers also spoke about “hot bedding” - where workers on different shifts share a bed, have their wages and travel costs imposed with no employment contracts or job protection.
