New projects launched to support vulnerable workers
A pilot project providing advice and support to some of London and Birmingham’s most vulnerable workers and their employers was launched today by Employment Relations Minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
The DTI has given funding to the TUC and Marketing Birmingham, who will each lead a pilot in London and Birmingham respectively. They will also bring together organisations such as business groups, advice bodies and local authorities to tackle the problems faced by vulnerable workers.
The project will focus on workers who are not getting their full employment rights. Cleaners, security guards, caretakers and housekeeping staff working in building services in the City of London and Tower Hamlets will be the focus of the pilot.
The DTI has also announced a ‘Vulnerable Worker Enforcement Forum’ will bring together experts from unions, business, enforcement and advice bodies to look at the best way to protect the vulnerable in the workforce.
