Posted on July 2nd, 2007 by Nicola
The Commission’s final report, Our Shared Future was published on 14 June 2007. It provides practical approaches to building communities’ own capacity to reduce tensions and create opportunities for more integrated and cohesive societies.
The report contains a large number of recommendations including:
- Urging the Department for Education and Skills (DfES) to reconsider cuts in the funding of English Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) provision for migrants, and to explore more innovative ways of making ESOL provision available.
- Calling for the development of specialist integration and cohesion teams, made up of integration experts with experience in managing change, conflict resolution and public service planning. They would advise council leaders, local communities and providers of public services.
- Promoting a nationally sponsored community week that should celebrate the history and diversity of local areas.
