UK opts out of EU Charter of Fundamental Rights
Following the recent European Summit the UK has opted out of the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights. The European Union Charter of Fundamental Rights sets out in a single text, for the first time in the European Union’s history, the whole range of civil, political, economic and social rights of European citizens and all persons resident in the EU.
Brendan Barber, TUC General Secretary and Chair of the Commission on Vulnerable Employment said “It is extremely disappointing to see that UK workers and citizens are to enjoy fewer rights than those in the rest of Europe following the opt-out from Europe’s Charter of Fundamental Rights. Are we to think that the UK economy can only prosper by treating UK employees worse than others in Europe?”
