Dominos pizza franchise accussed of exploitation
The BBC has reported on exploitation of staff working for a Domino’s pizza franchise in Derby.
Fifteen young Hungarian workers joined the T&G section of Unite to challenge what they considered to be systematic exploitation by the franchise holder employing them. They were seeking to be treated on a par with the UK workers they worked alongside but their most urgent demand was to arrest the spiral of debt into which they were locked by the constant and high deductions from their wages.
After mounting their challenge the workers were summarily dismissed. They were left penniless and at risk of losing their tied accommodation.
The union has instructed a solicitor to investigate the matter more fully, and has also alerted the authorities to the need for a thorough investigation.
They are extremely concerned that in the few months the workers have been here, many have built up significant debts to their employers with money deducted from their wages for:
- £50 each per week rent for a room in sub-standard accommodation
- High and vastly varying deductions for of tax and National Insurance
- Hundreds of pounds to buy aging delivery vehicles and hundreds more for the insurance
Some have also paid a £180 to be found a job with Domino’s.
