Jack Dromey

Jack Dromey was elected Deputy General Secretary of the T&G in October 2003.
Previously he led for the union in the public services, the defence sector and the nuclear industry. He was chairman of the local government unions for the one-million strong strike against low pay and for equal pay in 2002. In 1992 he led the successful battle against the closure of the Rosyth Royal Dockyard in Scotland saving 20,000 jobs.
Jack first rose to prominence in 1977 when, as secretary of the Brent Trades Council, he led the Grunwick strike for union recognition. He was also secretary of the Brent Federation of Tenants and Residents Associations, founding the second Community Law Centre in Britain in Brent.
A life-long campaigner, Jack organised the occupation of Centrepoint in 1974, culminating in a 10,000-strong demonstration against property speculation. In 1981, he organised the People’s March for Jobs, bringing 200,000 people to London in protest at the Thatcher recession. He served for ten years on the Executive of the National Council for Civil Liberties.
Jack is head of the T&G Organising Department. Jack believes unions have to reach out to the most exploited in our society, helping them to organise to win respect and decent pay and living standards. A champion of migrant workers, he leads the campaign in London to organise Building Cleaners. A life-long Labour Party member, Jack was first elected as the Treasurer of the Labour Party in 2004.
